What now for your online magazine?
Finally, a platform that allows you to bring magazine publishing wisdom into the online space.
By Jonathan Winch
Since the Internet became mainstream, companies have tried all sorts of ways to get their newsletters into electronic form. But whether you choose website media rooms, blogs, e-newsletters that take you to a website page, page-turning PDFs or even the latest iApp-based magazines such as Project or Wired, none of them check enough of the boxes for a truly powerful yet workable and affordable solution.
Here is our wishlist for a best practice online magazine platform…
- Sexy – you’ve got to (cost-effectively) be able to make it look great every time
- Fully editable – CMS-based so you can make changes any time and easily
- Socially enabled – readers can post comments, share articles and videos with others
- Issue-oriented – i.e. it won’t lead you to a landing page for one article then lose its newsletter structure
- Browsable archives – so readers can see and locate articles from past issues
- Multi-platform – automatically works with mainstream browsers, iPad, mobile phones and even Blackberry
- Full analytics – so you can track reader actions and fine-tune your content
- Search-friendly – supports company-wide lead generation
- Enterprise level – scalability and security your IT department will approve of
- Open source – why get locked into someone else’s proprietary technology?
This month’s release of Wordspin showcases the first publishing platform for company magazines that does all of the above. It’s the result of hundreds of hours of thinking and development and, naturally, we’re very pleased with the result. But the technology is only part of the equation. The real magic lies in being able to bring readers a magazine-like experience that exploits best practices from the publishing industry.
While it was designed as a magazine or newsletter publishing tool, the platform can also be used for training programs, product launches and similar.
